Biriwiri means ‘greenness’ in Malawi’s national language, Chichewa. The duo is so named to reflect the positivity in their music. Biriwiri draws its inspiration and influence from African oral literature, Malawi’s musical heritage and American hip-hop. Their music contains extensive use of Chichewain their rap lyrics while they tackle themes relevant to the everyday lives of ordinary Malawians.
Biriwiri is currently promoting their second album Umayitha. The album was launched in 2009 in Blantyre and Lilongwe, Malawi’s capital city. The first single Pompo Pompo can be viewed on www.youtube.com/biriwiri.
